"Storm Fall" Artist's Description:

My incredibly soft, warm, fluffy, pudgy cat decided to sit on me while I was futzing around on the computer. He's so darn cute, I couldn't move him, so I made this waiting for him to get up >.<

He's still here though. . . I am losing feeling in my legs. . .

Hahaha, your cat does you a service with that stuff :D
I love the title of this piece, and the way you've situated the smaller moon with the
terrestrial planet here. That and the gorgeous blue lighting makes this beautiful. :)

I have a question? How do you get that lighter color behind the planet lighting up the space? I have a heck of a time trying to do that...is there a tut somewhere? BTW I love the last 3 your posted. Wonderful scenes!

For direct planet lighting I use techniques similar to the ones in The Grand Planet Tutorial, but for lighting around the planet or space in general, I usually just paint around until it looks halfway decent. I'll make a few low opacity layers using the Screen, Color Dodge, and Linear Dodge blending modes for my lighting. For this piece I had
1) Black background painted over with low opacity blue in certain areas
2) Soft blue painted around where my planet would be, set to "Screen" and about 36% opacity
3) And then the planet, planet shadows, and atmosphere.
After I have these basic layers, I just paint around above and below the existing layers adding lights (screen, color dodge, overlay, and linear dodge blending modes) and shadows (overlay, soft light, multiply, and color burn blending modes)

I don't know if that answers your question, but I hope I've been of a little help! If there is a tutorial somewhere and I come across it I'd be happy to let you know :)

And many thanks for the :+fav:s; There's much I can improve in my work, but whenever I see comments or favs it always motivates me to keep trying and learning. Much appreciated!
