"I Drop Gems" Artist's Description

Named after "I Drop Gems" by _ensnare_. There really are no words apt enough to describe how awesome this song is. Seriously, if this is your bag, check it out. You may very well fall in love. Don't judge right away, though. Let it's awesomeness build up and surround you first.

Besides being named after one of my favorite pieces of music, this work of mine is quite clearly inspired by eatenwaffle, who I wish had more videos. (You can find eatenwaffle under a different name here on dA.) Granted, I only tend to watch about 2 minutes or so of his videos. I don't want to mimic them exactly. I just like to use them to give me a boost, another way to learn some new techniques and get myself out of the box and hopefully give me some ideas. I'm a bit wary of uploading a piece that's so similar to another artist's work, especially an artist as amazingly talented as that one, but I can't help myself. My "I Drop Gems" is just a learning piece, but I still like the way it came out. It's lacking some detail, and some perspective, but it makes me happy, and that's all I can ask for :)

Hello:
This image is simply gorgeous, because of how it was made as for what it is shown: a great planet with a very well-made ring system (not cluttered and of a relatively good size) and hat seems to be cities below.

Simply inspiring :happybounce:

Stunning work here madam! I just listened to the song recommended in the description and I think I love it too. :D

Teal was always one of my favourite colours to see in your works. I don't know why; I do know that I love teals, turquoises, and
other bluish greens of the like, but your ability to really let them come to life is astounding. There is a pulse you can feel here in the
light source and the planet's rings; as if each stone contains a large green gem at the centre. :) LOVE the nebula in the back!

I love the colors! How do you do city lights?! That the hardest part for me....

Thanks! For the lights, I create a color dodge layer, filled with neutral, over my planet. I then use one of the standard Photoshop texture brushes and paint randomly with a color ranging from #dad5a8 to #ffffff. But there are lots of different ways to make lights. For instance, I found using images like this: [link] (from NASA) can be helpful. Open the image in Photoshop, select the highlights, bring them into your space scene on top of your planet, set the layer to color dodge, and there you go :)

awesome! What techniques did you use to create these beautiful rings?

Thanks! I started in a square document (about 3500 x 3500 px) and created a radial gradient from the center. I used one of the preset noise gradients, with the roughness increased to 100%. Then using the elliptical marquee I cut out my rings. After that it was a matter of adjusting the colors to fit my space scene, enhancing the brightness and contrast, and finding the right blending mode :)
